CIRA is currently exploring the development of a network of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in Canada.
Over the past decade, the Internet has grown significantly both in size and social and economic importance. The corresponding growth of IP traffic has also been explosive, positioning the Internet as a critical piece of infrastructure in Canada.
An Internet Exchange Point is:
“A physical network infrastructure operated by a single entity with the purpose to facilitate the exchange of Internet traffic between Autonomous Systems. The number of Autonomous Systems connected should at least be three and there must be a clear and open policy for others to join.” IXPs add a critical robustness to the Internet infrastructure in a particular geographic region by routing traffic locally and by accessing content providers directly. This benefits Canadian Internet users by increasing Internet application response time and keeping traffic local within a region.

Actuellement, l’ACEI explore l’élaboration d’un réseau de points d’échange Internet (PEI) au Canada.
Au cours de la dernière décennie, Internet a connu une croissance fulgurante, et ce, tant en matière d’ampleur que d’importance sociale et économique. La croissance du trafic IP a suivi la même courbe, positionnant ainsi Internet à titre d’élément essentiel de l’infrastructure au Canada.
La définition d’un point d’échange Internet est la suivante :
« Une infrastructure de réseau physique exploitée par une seule entité dans le but de faciliter les échanges de trafic Internet entre des systèmes autonomes. À tout le moins, trois systèmes autonomes doivent y être connectés, et une politique claire et ouverte doit être élaborée de sorte que d’autres s’y greffent. »
Les PEI confèrent une robustesse cruciale à l’infrastructure Internet dans une région particulière grâce au routage local du trafic et à l’accès direct aux fournisseurs de contenu. Puisque le temps de réponse de l’application Internet en sera amélioré et que le trafic local sera maintenu dans une région circonscrite, les internautes canadiens s’en trouveront avantagés.
